Green Space Project – Breton High School

Breton High School’s Health Action Team, along with a group of staff, parents and community members have formed a committee to investigate the possibility of developing a green space at our school.  We feel that this project will further support our healthy school culture and will also serve as another link between school and community.

Plans for the space include a vegetable and herb garden, feature plantings, trees, walking paths, a water feature and a memorial space.  We hope to encourage its use by both humans and beneficial wildlife.  Our plan is to make the area accessible to wheel chairs, and to make the space convenient for use by all ages and abilities, including people with mobility issues.

We also foresee the area being used as an out door classroom and have linked the designing and care of the space to school curriculum to give all students an opportunity to benefit from the space.

Recently we were able, courtesy of the Evergreen Foundation, to retain the services of Kathy Goble, a landscape designer. The above sketch is of our proposed Green Space in the area between the east and west wings of the school. Kathy used the results of student and staff surveys which were conducted last spring to develop the design. We now will begin aggressively pursuing any and all funding opportunities available and will hopefully have some of the design concepts in place by spring!
