Student Program Placement




Children are more successful learners if educators and parents/guardians agree on their program placement. Decisions regarding student program placement should be a professional responsibility, unless the parent/guardian can demonstrate just cause for an alternate placement.




1.      The Division supports in-school student placements that are teacher initiated and Principal approved. It also supports inter-school and inter-system student placements approved by the Superintendent or designate.


2.      For the purpose of ensuring adherence to the principles of fundamental justice, the Division supports the provision of an appeal structure for parents/guardians disputing system initiated placement decisions affecting students.


3.      Where the student involved has special needs, the specific mechanism for lodging an appeal shall be through a Special Needs Tribunal, as outlined in the School Act.


4.      All appeals regarding student placement shall be in writing, stating reasons for the appeal. This shall be submitted to the Principal with a copy to the Superintendent for information.
