Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

Traditionally, apprenticeships in Alberta begin after students graduate from high school. However, some students identify their career interests at an earlier age, and are ready to get started learning and practicing their future trade while in high school. RAP students divide their time between an approved work site and their high school. They take regular courses, such as English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics in order to earn their Alberta High School Diploma or Certificate of Achievement. RAP students are both full-time students and registered apprentices. A student may be able to earn up to 40 credits. The student might work as a RAP apprentice for a semester, for half of each school day, for one or two days per week, or during summers, holidays and weekends. 

Benefits of entering a RAP Program:

  • RAP students are paid and receive minimum wage or higher
  • Obtain a Bluebook and earn up to 1000 hours towards apprenticeship training
  • Receive a $1000 High school Apprenticeship scholarship if requirements are met
  • Receive a head start with the first year of apprenticeship training
  • Earn up to 40 high school credits

Employers are more likely to select students with :

  • a valid drivers licence
  • are available to work full-time for a minimum of one semester
  • are close to graduation or returning after graduation
  • have CTS experience

WRSD requires the following:

  • Student is on track with graduation plan. 
  • Student has good academic standing, in core classes.
  • Student has excellent attendance at school.
  • Student maintain responsibility for their learning. 

Prerequisite Course required: 

Apprenticeship Safety (HCS-3000)*

Workplace Safety Practices (HCS3010)– recommended

*Any student entering into off-campus education programs are required to complete HCS-3000 prior to commencement of a work experience program.
