Board Highlights - September 16, 2025

National Truth and Reconciliation Day Activities

WRSD recognizes that September 30 is not a holiday, but a day of commemoration, reflection, and deep commitment. Across the division, staff and students are taking part in opportunities that honour this important day: engaging with the New Blood Dance Group performance, learning through the Inuit Experience Youth Event with Knowledge Holder Goota Demarais, contributing to the division-wide Legacy of Love quilt project, and continuing the symbolism of the Forget Me Not flower introduced last year.

These shared experiences, along with resources and activities provided to schools, reflect our collective responsibility to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and live out reconciliation in meaningful ways.

Election Update

Currently there are candidates running in each ward except for Ward 5 which is the Town of Rocky Mountain House.  As it stands now, there will be elections in Ward 2 and 4.  A full list of candidates is available on our website.  WRSD is very grateful for the Election Services Agreements we have with our municipal partners.  The Board reviewed the Ward Map that will be updated in the near future.

 International Travel

The Board discussed travelling internationally for students and chaperones in the current political climate.  All international travel is approved by the board and follows AP 260 Field Trips, which allows for trips to be cancelled at any time should a circumstance arise which may pose a critical threat to student safety.

Social Media Litigation

The Board reviewed the presentation from Cuming and Gillespie, an Alberta law firm who is bringing a mass tort litigation on behalf of school boards for the harm that social media is causing students and schools, and passed a motion to join the litigation.

Rocky Christian School

The board made a motion to approve the lease of space in École Rocky Elementary School to Rocky Christian School Society for the 2025-2026 school year.  This is in recognition of the delays that the Society is facing with their current building expansion.
