School Start Date Delay and Important Safety Update

Re: Rocky Christian School and École Rocky Elementary

Wild Rose School Division is announcing an important update regarding the start of the school year for students and staff from Rocky Christian School and École Rocky Elementary. Students and staff at Rocky Christian School and École Rocky Elementary will now begin on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025.

This past summer, the Rocky Christian School Society undertook an expansion and renovation project on the school building, which is owned by the society and leased by Wild Rose School Division (WRSD). The project was running behind schedule, and in a collaborative decision, WRSD and the Rocky Christian School Society determined the building would not be ready to open for the start of the school year. As a result, plans were made to temporarily house Rocky Christian School students and staff at École Rocky Elementary.

On Friday, August 29, we were informed that testing undertaken by the Rocky Christian School Society confirmed the presence of asbestos in areas of the Rocky Christian School building that were disturbed during renovations. This has resulted in the full closure of the building until professional remediation is completed.

WRSD has further concerns that items, including boxes and furnishings, that were brought over to École Rocky Friday afternoon, prior to knowing about the asbestos, may have asbestos present on them. Out of an abundance of caution, we need to  confirm that there is no risk of contamination at École Rocky Elementary.

Therefore, on Monday, September 1, an environmental consulting firm will conduct a thorough inspection and testing of the École Rocky Elementary building. This includes all affected classrooms and associated spaces. Should any asbestos be found, a comprehensive plan to safely and quickly remove it will be put into place. At this time, both schools are anticipating being open on Wednesday, September 3.

Maintaining a safe environment for everyone is of utmost importance to us. We will provide a further update when the test results and further information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Jodie Mattia
